Frequently Asked Questions
Home > Research Library > Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm not a member, where can I purchase CEA reports and data?
A: Our consumer research studies and historical sales database can be purchased at eBrain.org. If you are interested in monthly and weekly product sales data, read about our Market Activity Reports and Analysis (MARA) program. We also offer an Industry Forecast.

Q: Does CEA offer reduced student rates for market research or consumer research publications?
A: No, but we do have quite a bit of free information available on CE.org.

  • CEA's online annual publication Digital America, for example, is a great industry overview, which includes an industry timeline, statistics, trends and a list of related associations.
  • There are other free publications in the press area of our site, including the award-winning journal CE Vision.
  • Try the press release section as well; releases are often an excellent free source.

Q: Does CEA have an academic membership category?
A: No, we do not offer an academic membership at this time.

Q: How do I become a member of CEA?
A: Members receive free access to most CEA market research, discounts on CEA events, and many other benefits. See the membership page for more information, or phone 703-907-7756.

Q: Are CEA studies cited in publicly available sources?
A. Yes, ask your university librarian (or public library) for help. The Statistical Abstract carries much of CEA's market data.

Q: How do I cite CEA information? Can you give an example?
A: "Consumer Electronics Association" as the source -- include the date and title of the report or study.

Q: Where can I find the latest news on the industry?
A: CEA’s bimonthly publication, CE Vision, offers the latest news and trends in the consumer electronics industry. Also check out our annual Digital America publication for an overview of the industry, household penetration rates, and unit sales data for individual consumer electronic products. Sign up for a daily briefing on top stories in the consumer electronics industry, free at CEA SmartBrief.

Q: What is DTV? What is HDTV? What is the digital television transition?
A: After February 17, 2009, all television signals in the U.S. will be broadcast digitally. If you currently receive analog television over the air or via an antenna, you’ll need to take action to continue watching your favorite stations. Learn more from the DTV Transition Coalition.

Q: Where can I find market share information for a segment of the CE industry?
A: The Consumer Electronics Association does not publish market share information.

Q: I have an electronic device that doesn’t work. Can CEA help me?
A: For products that do not work, you will need to contact the manufacturer of the product directly.

Q: If you are a member of the press:
A: See our communications contacts to find a specialist on the topic you are interested in. The Communication Department’s phone number is 703-907-4365. Some CEA research data is available in our electronic press kits.
