CONSUMER ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION OFFICIALS AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT ON THE CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION'S NEW MANDATORY STANDARDS IMPACTING CONSUMER ELECTRONICS
Industry Evaluates Regulations' Economic and Technical Feasibility As Well As Impact on Consumers and Innovation

Arlington, Virginia 1/27/2006

WHAT:
Officials from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®) will be available for comment on the impact of the California Energy Commission's (CEC's) new Appliance Efficiency Regulations, which limit the energy use of several consumer electronics products.

At a workshop hosted by the CEC on Monday, January 30th, CEA and its members, representing both manufacturers and retailers, will urge the CEC to reconsider these regulations. Currently, the mandatory standards imperil product innovation and consumer choice, compromise the national Energy Star program, and threaten to hinder the digital transition and could actually increase energy consumption.

CEA believes that in justifying these regulations, the CEC relied upon estimates and findings with which CEA disagrees. As a result, the CEC's regulations for consumer electronics may not be cost-effective and in some cases are infeasible. This week, in response to the consumer electronics industry's concerns, the CEC will begin the process of reconsidering its mandatory regulations for consumer electronics.
