HGTV Smart Home 2013 Promotes Rating System

Recently, CEA teamed up with HGTV to build the first-ever high-tech smart home, using CEA’s TechHome Rating System (THRS). The HGTV Smart Home 2013 is a charming shingle-style cottage home nestled in the beach community of Paradise Key South Beach in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. New Research: Mobile Devices Lead Electronics Purchases

For the first time in the 15 years of conducting the Annual Household CE Ownership and Market Potential Study, the top four products with the highest increased household penetration rates are mobile devices. Tablet computers were the leading CE growth driver this past year with a 17 percent increase in household penetration rates over 2012, followed by increased penetration rates for smartphones (12 percent), e-readers (10 percent) and wireless mobile hotspots (10 percent). The 15th Annual Household CE Ownership and Market Potential Study also found that CE spending is up for individuals (35 percent) and households (36 percent) over the last 12 months. New Research: CEA/APEX Study Reveals Use of Electronic Devices in Flight

Ninety-nine percent of adult airline passengers who travel with a portable electronic device (PED) – such as a smartphone or tablet – carried at least one PED onboard with them while traveling in the past 12 months, with 69 percent reporting they used their devices during flight, according to a new joint study released by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The study, Portable Electronic Devices on Aircraft, gauges consumer usage and awareness concerning PEDs on airplanes. New Research: CE Industry Sees 27 Percent Increase in Responsible Recycling in 2012

A new report released by CEA reveals 585 million pounds of electronics were responsibly recycled in 2012 by CE companies. As of April 2013, there are more than 8,000 responsible recycling locations available to consumers nationwide. The Second Annual Report of the eCycling Leadership Initiative tracks the efforts of the CE industry nationwide to make recycling electronics easy– and to make responsible recycling of electronics an option for consumers in all 50 states. New Research: 11th Annual ‘State of the Builder’ Study

The overall growth of the home technology market remained consistent from 2011 to 2012, demonstrating home technology has a strong, stable foothold, according to findings in the 11th Annual State of the Builder Technology Market Study. Technology installations in new homes reached or exceeded 2008-levels, providing more evidence that the market for built-in home technologies is well on the road to recovery. Structured wiring remains the most common installed technology (70 percent), followed by monitored security (44 percent) and home theater pre-wire systems (27 percent).
