CONSUMER ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY HELPS WILMINGTON AREA SENIORS LIVING IN LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES CONVERT TO DIGITAL TELEVISION
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
®
announced today it will provide more than 100 free digital television converter boxes to residents living in long-term care facilities in Wilmington, North Carolina, and the surrounding counties. The converter boxes will be provided to residents who do not subscribe to pay-TV service, ensuring they can continue to watch their favorite programs free over-the-air. Wilmington’s full-power commercial television stations will commence all-digital broadcasting on September 8, 2008, five months ahead of the nationwide digital conversion on February 17, 2009.

Over-the-air analog TV viewers now have a new, free, all-in-one resource at their fingertips to help prepare for February 17, 2009, when all full-power TV stations in the U.S. will broadcast exclusively in digital. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
®
today announced the publication of “Florence Henderson’s Digital Tips,” a brochure available for free by mail, as well as online, that explains in simple terms why the digital television transition is happening and what options and assistance are available for viewers. The brochure is part of CEA’s ongoing “Convert Your Mom” public education effort featuring entertainer Florence Henderson, best known for her role as Carol Brady on TV’s “The Brady Bunch.”

CEA APPLAUDS PROPOSED EARLY TRANSITION TO ALL-DIGITAL TV IN WILMINGTON, NC
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today announced that the Wilmington, North Carolina, television market will complete its migration to digital television five months before the rest of the nation converts to DTV on February 17, 2009. The FCC concluded that on September 8, 2008, full-power commercial television broadcasters in Wilmington, North Carolina will have completed all the necessary steps to finalize their transition to digital.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR AMERICA'S "RABBIT EARS PIONEERS"

and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) today launched a nationwide contest to help over-the-air viewers make the switch to digital television. The “Rabbit Ears Pioneers” competition will search for the most interesting stories, memories and anecdotes from individuals who receive over-the-air broadcast TV signals using an antenna on an older analog television set. The contest is designed to encourage “Pioneers” to prepare in advance of the February 17, 2009 deadline, when all full-power stations in the U.S. must begin broadcasting exclusively in a digital format.

CONSUMERS PLAN TO SELL, DONATE OR RECYCLE 95 PERCENT OF UNUSED ANALOG TVs FOLLOWING THE DTV TRANSITION
Questions of what will happen to millions of analog TVs following next year's transition to digital television (DTV) have been answered with news that is also good for the environment, according to a new study released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
®
. Indeed, results of the study, Trends in Consumer Electronics (CE) Afterlife show that households receiving broadcast signals only over-the-air (OTA) expect to remove fewer than 15 million televisions from their homes through 2010, ninety-five percent of which will be sold, donated or recycled. Most OTA-only households expect to buy a digital converter box (48%) and continue using the same TV.

The year 2006 will be the year that high-definition television (HDTV) outsells analog television set units, forecasts the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®). According to sales projections issued yesterday by CEA, HDTV sets will outsell analog sets by 89 percent in 2006, reaching total unit sales of 15.9 million and contributing to over $23 billion in total DTV revenue.

2005 DTV SALES TO DATE INCREASE 45 PERCENT COMPARED TO LAST YEAR
Digital television (DTV) sales continue to soar as demonstrated by the latest factory-to-dealer sales released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). According to CEA, 3.8 million units have been shipped from January through June of 2005, bringing the total dollar sales to date to more than $4.6 billion. These sales figures mark a 45 percent increase in unit sales and a 23 percent increase in dollar sales over the same period in 2004.

CEA FCC Filing Says Cable Industry Must Keep Promise Of Digital Cable Ready And CableCARD
Digital cable ready (DCR) television sets are a marketplace reality that requires the full backing of both the consumer electronics (CE) and cable industries, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) wrote in an ex parte filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). CEA filed its comments yesterday in response to submissions from the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and its members, urging the FCC to lift its requirement that cable operators and competitive products rely on a common interface for purposes of conditional access. The interface and conditional access measures provide protections to prevent theft of service and damage to the cable system.

In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition (CERC) urged the FCC to accelerate the digital television (DTV) tuner mandate timetable.
