CEA STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF COMMUNITY BROADBAND ACT OF 2007
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® Senior Director, Government Affairs Veronica O’Connell today issued the following statement in response to the Community Broadband Act of 2007 (S. 1853 and H.R. 3281), bi-partisan legislation by the U.S. House and Senate that will advance the nationwide deployment of broadband:

NEW CEA STUDY FINDS 43 MILLION AMERICAN HOUSEHOLDS NOW HAVE BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS
Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®) President and CEO Gary Shapiro today announced that 43 million U.S. households now have broadband Internet access compared to just two million in 1999, according to the results of a new CEA research study on broadband access in America. Shapiro introduced the findings during his opening keynote at the Electronic House Expo (EHX), which runs through April 1, 2006 in Orlando, Florida.

AT&T, BELLSOUTH, VERIZON AND CEA ANNOUNCE PRINCIPLES ON DEVICE ATTACMENT
As telecommunications providers begin to launch video services for consumers nationwide, AT&T, BellSouth, Verizon and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®) today announced a series of principles designed to ensure the commercial availability of devices that attach to Internet Protocol (IP)-enabled video networks. The companies joined CEA in unveiling the principles at a press conference held during CEA's "Entertainment Technology Policy Summit" running March 15-16 in Washington, D.C.

Technology Industries Unite In Their Views That The BETAMAX Doctrine Must Be Upheld And Not Weakened
The Betamax doctrine is the foundation of this nation's explosive technological growth over the last 20 years and is particularly critical to new digital technology, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) argues in an amicus brief filed today in the U.S. Supreme Court case Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. Filed by CEA in conjunction with the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) and the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC), the brief argues that the principles set forth by the Supreme Court in the Sony Corp. v. Universal City Studios Inc. (Betamax) case should be upheld.

CEA Announces Guiding Priciples For Telecommunication Policy Reform
With Congress expected to revisit the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996 in coming months, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) today announced guiding principles for telecommunications policy reform. Recognizing that the rapid advancement of new digital technologies and services has outpaced current regulations established under the '96 Telecom Act, CEA's principles are designed to guide policymakers as they establish a new communications policy framework that recognizes the numerous developments that have occurred over the past nine years and attempts to create a legal and regulatory environment to facilitate additional advancements.

CEA Applauds FCC Action To Preempt State Regulation Of VoIP Services
Consumer Electronics Association President and CEO Gary Shapiro today issued the following statement regarding action taken by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP). In response to a petition filed by the Vonage Holdings Inc., a company offering VoIP services, the FCC ruled to assert federal jurisdiction over interstate VoIP services. Declaring that VoIP services are interstate services, shields such services from state regulation and provides the appropriate framework to establish one federal nationwide VoIP policy.

CEA Applauds FCC Action Advancing Broadband Over Power Lines
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) declared its support for the adoption of new rules for "access broadband over power line" service (Access BPL), in comments submitted yesterday to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro issued the following statement. "CEA believes that adopting these rules permitting Access BPL will advance the deployment and adoption of broadband. We also applaud the Commissions efforts to eliminate possible interference caused by BPL services. We look forward to reading the final text of the rules.

Declaring that voice-over-the-Internet (VoIP) services and Internet protocol (IP)-enabled services are interstate services not subject to state jurisdiction would avoid a patchwork of state laws and provide regulatory clarity needed to spur investment, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) argued in a recent filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
