CEA Letter Regarding S. 2560
CEA's letter outlines industry concerns that the "Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act of 2004" (S. 2560) could jeopardize the crucial protection for innovators that was established in the Betamax ruling by essentially granting copyright owners veto power over the introduction of any new technology for home and personal use that they deem objectionable.

CEA Files Amici Brief In Support Of Public Domain
CEA joined other parties in filing a friend of the court brief arguing the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) violates the Constitution by creating an imbalance between copyright and broad public access. The case, Eldred v. Ashcroft, is before the US Supreme Court.

CEA Files Amicus Brief in Support of SONICblue
CEA led four other technology trade associations yesterday in filing an amici curiae (friend of the court) brief in support of personal video recorder (PVR) manufacturer, SONICblue, the defendant in U.S. District Court case Paramount Pictures Corporation, et. al., v. ReplayTV and SONICblue. The plaintiffs in the case claim that commercial skipping, which consumers have done through a variety of methods (including changing the channel), violates their copyright. Joining CEA in the amici brief filing were the Information Technology Association of America, the Computer & Communications Industry Association and the Association for Competitive Technology. The brief specifically supported SONICblue's objections to the court's April 26, 2002 discovery order. The order would force SONICblue to develop and install new software in consumers' PVRs that would collect all information about what programs users watch, record or send to a select and limited group. The company then would be forced to provide the information to the motion picture studios -- the plaintiff suing the company for allegedly contributing to copyright infringement.
